e-learning package is now running directly from the ROADEX web site's server.

24 March 2008 - Final reports and videos published on this web site.

21 February 2008 - Steering Committee and potential new partners from Greenland, Russia and Ireland meet in Rovaniemi, Finland to prepare ideas for future ROADEX research.

31 December 2007 - NPP funding window closed.

ROADEX II - The Research & Innovation Project

The ROADEX partnership has so far assembled the following “ROADEX knowledge”:

  • 12 formal reports (totalling over 1500 pages of technical and research information) published elsewhere on this site - click here;

  • a range of engineering papers presented at international conferences and seminars;

  • a multimedia DVD - 2,500 copies being distributed worldwide;

  • a regularly updated website that had around 100 ‘hits’ per month during the life of ROADEX II.

 Some of the “ROADEX Solutions” developed are:

  • New information for political decision makers about the importance of rural road condition

  • New survey practices to focus on actual problem sections and making correct diagnosis for the problems

  • New models and treatment agents for designing economical structures against permanent deformation

  • New fit for purpose road construction designs and life cycle information

  • New techniques for real time road condition  monitoring

  • New ideas for using modern information and sensor technology in rural road network condition management

Project Log :-

February 2002 - NPP offer grant of €200,000 - but €50,000 less than had been planned.

March 2002 - Roadscanners Oy, with Timo Saarenketo as Project Manager, employed to manage and run the project through a full EU tender process. Roadscanners reported to the Steering Committee with Highland Council as lead partner.

April 2002 - First Steering Committee meeting in Inverness, Scotland.

May 2002 - Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) express interest in joining the project.

May ‘02 - Road Condition Working Team (RCWT) meeting in Tampere to organize and set up tasks.

June ‘02 - RCWT meeting on feedback from Finnish Questionnaire. Status review.

June 2002 - NPP confirm €200,000 grant offer with eligible project costs of €475,000. Project under way with reduced outputs.

November 2002 - Steering Committee meeting no. 2 in Jyväskylä, Finland.

September 2003 - Steering Committee meeting no. 3 in Finnsness, Norway.

March 2004 - Steering Committee meeting no. 4 in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden.

April 2004 - Phase 1 Report published.

October 2004 - Steering Committee meeting no. 5 in Tain, Scotland.

Spring 2005 - research reports published and the project closed in

April 2005 - Closing Seminar Jyväskylä, Finland to present the research findings and the project DVD.

June 2005 - with ROADEX presented and exhibiting at the INTERACT event in Prague.

August 2005 - final versions of the reports published via the web.
